4.1.1. In-Store: Build in a participating store’s makerspace/workshop; or

4.1.2. At-Home: Build at home and bring to a participating store.

4.2. Accessibility

If you need a reasonable accommodation to participate, please contact your local TGTG store member to discuss. The Sponsors and stores will make good-faith efforts consistent with applicable law. If digital forms are not reasonably available due to a disability, a paper alternative will be provided upon request, with store staff transferring details into the Jotform.

4.3. Entry Requirements

All entries must be submitted at a participating member store by scanning the in-store QR code and completing the Sponsor-hosted Jotform on the entrant’s own mobile device while in store. Stores must not collect paper entries or create, download, or otherwise retain local copies of any entry data. For entrants aged 18+, Jotform collects the following details: name, email, phone number, mailing address, and basic entry information. For entrants under 18, a Responsible Adult (parent or legal guardian) must complete the form and provide their own name, email, phone, and mailing address; for the child/Participant, only first name and age band are collected.

4.4. Entry photos captured by store.

Participating stores will photograph the entry in-store on a store device after the Jotform has been submitted. Entrants are not required to upload photos themselves. Stores control their photos and may publish them on their own social accounts only in accordance with Section 6.4 (including consent/crop/blur requirements). Stores are not required to upload photos to the Sponsors; the Sponsors may request assets for a winner announcement, in which case stores will provide those assets and delete local copies within 24 hours of confirmed transmission.

4.6. Store Role (collection agent only).

Participating stores facilitate entry by displaying the QR code, assisting with basic questions, and taking photographs of entries. Stores act solely as collection agents for the Sponsors. Store staff must not handle an entrant’s personal device or input personal information on an entrant’s behalf, except where necessary for accessibility and only with the entrant’s or Responsible Adult’s consent. Stores must not retain, export, print, photograph screens, or otherwise copy entrant personal information.

4.7. Entry Limit

There is a limit of one (1) entry per person.

4.8. Minor Entrants (under 18)

5. Judging Criteria & Winner Selection

5.1. Overview (contest of skill; store-led process)

This competition is judged on skill. Each participating Member Store conducts judging locally in accordance with the Staff Guide and these Official Rules. A nominated representative of each participating store will judge entries at that store. Entries will be judged according to the rubric in Section 5.2 below. Judges may apply a holistic assessment and are not required to assign numeric scores unless a store chooses to do so. Entries must first meet all eligibility, originality, and safety requirements.

5.2. Judging criteria (guidance; optional scoring)

Judges may consider any or all of the following non-exclusive factors and may weight them as they deem appropriate. A store may, at its discretion, assign up to 10 points per factor (with a maximum of 50 points) or judge holistically without assigning points.

5.2.1. Originality & Creativity. Novel idea, imaginative approach, inventive use of cardboard and Makedo tools.

5.2.2. Aesthetic Appeal. Visual presentation, finish quality, color and texture choices, proportions, craftsmanship.

5.2.3. Complexity. Intricacy of the build, layered construction, innovative techniques; recognition may be given for interactive or mechanical elements that function reliably.

5.2.4. Use of Makedo. Appropriate, skilled use of Makedo tools and components; connections are clean, functional, and structurally sound; Makedo is integral to the design rather than incidental.

5.2.5. Kids Included. Meaningful involvement of a child or children in ideation, cutting, connecting, decorating, or presenting (where applicable).

Judges may consider additional factors consistent with these Rules and the spirit of the Competition, including safety, stability, and fit with the Sponsors’ brand values.

5.3. Store-level process

Each participating store will select one (1) Store Winner from eligible entries submitted at that store. Judging may be conducted by store staff, management, or a designated panel of judges. Stores may conduct a preliminary popular vote (including social media engagement) as input, provided that final validation is performed by store staff after confirming eligibility, originality, and safety.

5.4. National-level process

From among Store Winners, one (1) National Winner will be selected by a panel of representatives of Makedo and The Good Toy Group. The panel may review in-person builds, photos, or both; may request clarifications or additional images; and may apply the guidance criteria in Section 5.2 holistically, without adhering strictly to point totals.

5.5. Tie-Breakers

5.5.1. In the event of a tie at the Store Level, the store manager (or designated representative) will cast the deciding vote.

5.5.2. In the event of a tie at the National Level, Makedo reserves the sole right to make the final determination, which shall be binding.

5.6. Discretion & Authority of The Sponsors

5.6.1. The Sponsors have the sole discretion to determine whether any entry complies with these Rules and the spirit of the Competition.

5.6.2. The Sponsors reserve the right to disqualify any entry that, in their judgment:

5.6.3. Fails to meet material, originality, or safety requirements.

5.6.4. Is offensive, inappropriate, or inconsistent with Sponsors’ brand values.

5.6.5. Is suspected of being fraudulent or submitted in bad faith.

The Judges’ and the Sponsors’ decisions are final and binding in all respects.

Upon request, published identifying information for a minor may be limited to first name, last initial, and city/state.

6.5.2. The Sponsors will not be responsible or liable for any claim, loss, or damage arising from the publication of any content (including photographs, videos, or other materials) that depicts a minor, where such content has been created, submitted, or published by the Sponsor’s contractors, agents, or third parties (including participating stores) without the prior consent of the minor’s parent or legal guardian. This information must be stored securely (e.g., a single paper list in a locked drawer, or a store-managed digital list not synced to personal accounts), accessed only by staff assigned to the Competition, and must not be used for marketing. Retain only until the prize is collected or 60 days after local winner announcement (whichever occurs first), then delete/shred securely. Do not photograph the list, and do not share it outside the store and the Sponsors. Any suspected loss or misdirection must be reported to the Sponsors promptly.

This clause does not apply to liability caused by the Sponsors’ gross negligence or wilful misconduct, and does not exclude liability that cannot be excluded by law. Nothing in these Rules limits any non-excludable consumer guarantees or statutory rights. Subject to the preceding paragraph, the Sponsors’ aggregate liability to any entrant is limited to the minimum amount permitted by law. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Member Stores will indemnify and hold the Sponsors harmless from claims, losses and expenses arising out of the operation of a store’s Makerspace or any store social media post, except to the extent caused by the Sponsors’ gross negligence or wilful misconduct. Nothing in these Rules excludes non-excludable consumer guarantees or statutory rights.

11.2. Venue/Jurisdiction. For entrants who are residents of the United States, Sponsors consent to the non-exclusive jurisdiction and venue of any state or federal court located in the United States that has jurisdiction over the parties and the subject matter, including small claims courts. Nothing in this clause limits a U.S. consumer’s ability to bring a qualifying claim in small claims court in their home jurisdiction.

The following provisions survive: Section 2 (to the extent of compliance determinations), Section 5 (Intellectual Property & Publicity), Section 7.7 (No Warranties), Section 8 (Winner Notification & Verification, as to recordkeeping/legal retention), Section 9 (Privacy & Child Protection), Section 10 (General Conditions), Section 11 (Governing Law & Disputes), Section 12 (Winners List), Section 14 (Changes), and Definitions & Acronyms.

13.2. Duration.

Survival endures for the longer of: (a) the time required to fulfill the applicable purpose or legal obligation (including tax and privacy retention), (b) any period stated in these Rules (e.g., retention schedules), or (c) the applicable statute of limitations under governing law.

14. Changes to These Official Rules

14.1. Right to Update/Amend

The Sponsors may update, amend, clarify, or supplement these Official Rules at any time, in their sole discretion, to address legal/regulatory requirements, prevent fraud/abuse, protect safety, correct errors, or clarify ambiguities.

14.2. Notice: Effective Time.

Material changes will be posted on the Competition site and/or made available through participating stores, and will take effect prospectively from the date of posting unless a different effective date is specified. Where feasible, Sponsors will identify the “Last Updated” date.

14.3. No Retroactive Reduction of Prizes

Sponsors will not reduce stated prize values or materially alter the judging rubric in a manner that disadvantages entries already submitted, except where required by law or to address fraud/illegality that threatens the integrity of the Competition.

14.4. Adverse Change Opt-Out (Entrants).

If a posted change materially and adversely affects an Entrant’s rights during the Competition Period, the Entrant (or parent/guardian for a minor) may withdraw their entry by written notice to Sponsors within a reasonable time after notice of the change. Withdrawal ends further participation and eligibility for prizes. For publicity materials already created or distributed, Section 9.14 (Takedown/Withdrawal Limits) applies.

14.5. Conflicts

In the event of a conflict between a prior and later version of these Rules, the later version shall take effect from its date of publication.
